Rollrasen von Schwab: auch als öffentliches Grün die beste Alternative

Public green areas: Rolled turf satisfies all criteria

Rolled turf is often the better alternative for public green areas in comparison with traditional sowing. Public green areas normally cannot be closed off for an entire month until they are usable again. This is a problem that is easily solved with rolled turf.

Low maintenance costs and long service life

Additional important criteria for public green areas usually include low costs in procurement and care/maintenance (slow-growing, easy to care grass with a fresh, green appearance), a natural landscape look and long service life. We have the right product – even for difficult greening situations and extreme locations. Mixtures for nearly all areas of application that are extremely durable and grow reliably and beautiful with little care.

The right product for every greening situation

  • We grow durable turf qualities that are wonderfully green and very inviting for barefoot running and playing.
  • We produce hot/dry turfs that have a very high storage capability thanks to extremely deep roots with simultaneously low evaporation.
  • We grow beautiful and durable landscape turfs that can be integrated into any natural landscape and remain robust and long-lasting.
  • New to the programme is the microclover® white clover turf, an extremely easy to care for landscape grass that is also well-suited for leaner locations with a share of small-leaf white clover. With this combination, the slow-growing grass needs practically no fertiliser at all.
  • Our „Albrecht Dürer grass“ is a particular highlight. The first wildflower meadow as rolled turf after the painting „The Small Piece of Turf“.
  • Last, but not least, you will also find that we carry beautiful wildgrass qualities. Here you can combine the benefits of fast greening with rolled turf with an unbelievably affordable price.

PREMIUM turf for playing and homes

A top-quality turf that is dense, robust, has a durable grain, dark-green colour and average growth and is especially uniform in colour and structure.

We select our best quality turf from the core areas of our fields for our Premium turf play areas and homes. It is particularly consistent in colour and structure and always represents our best quality. Our play area turf is equivalent to a sport turf in terms of the grass composition, meaning it is highly durable, but somewhat less demanding in terms of care. Unlike sport turf, which is established on sandy soils, it is established on humic soils. The structure is also somewhat finer than that of our typical sport turf qualities.

Use: Home gardens, pools, fairways, public green areas. Attention: Only suitable for sunny areas, otherwise use partial-shade turf!

Grass composition 1 (approx.): 20 % Lolium perenne, 20 % Festuca rubra, 60 % Poa pratensis

Grass composition 2 (approx.): 20 % Lolium perenne, 5 % Festuca rubra, 75 % Poa pratensis

Growing soil: humic, slightly cohesive, good nutrient and water retention capability, pH value 6.5 – 7

STANDARD turf for play areas and homes

A dense, dark-green turf with slight colour and grain variations in comparison with Premium turf, including individual foreign and natural grasses, however it is robust, has a durable grain and average growth.

Good quality at a good price. In comparison with our premium quality, the Standard play area and home turf is less uniform in appearance. The turf may have individual colour differences or foreign grasses. However, this turf is highly durable and requires a somewhat less intensive care. Especially well-suited for affordable greening where the appearance of the grass is not the top priority.

Use: Home gardens, pools, fairways, public green areas. Attention: Only suitable for sunny areas, otherwise use partial-shade turf!

Partial-shade turf

Broad-leaf, stiff and firm, durable grass grain. Dark-green colour, uses less water, grows slowly, offshoot-sprouting, for best grain density.

Our best quality for partial-shade locations. With its broad, extremely dark green leaves, this turf has a very American appearance. The broad leaves also provide further advantages. They turn towards the sun and thereby better utilise the light better than other turfs. They also grow more slowly and generate less swatch. This turf has a very deep root system, which makes it extremely durable and assures that it gets by almost entirely without watering. Our partial-shade turf is suitable for sunny to partially shaded locations, but requires somewhat more fertilisation than play area turf.

Use: In partial-shade areas, but absolutely sun-loving. Very durable, also for areas of intense use, home gardens, tee boxes, fairways and sport fields. For areas with partial shade we recommend this turf for the entire surface, even the sunny parts.

Grass composition (approx.): 40 % Festuca arundinaceae, 30 % Lolium perenne, 30 % Poa pratensis

Hot and arid turf

Heat- and aridity-loving, but also compatible with partial-shade. Broad-leaf, stiff and firm, durable grass grain. Dark-green colour, uses less water, grows slowly, for best grain density.

Our hot and arid turf feels it’s best wherever extreme conditions prevail, in locations where it may not rain and which are exposed to the sun. Its range of applications also extends to partial shade locations. With its hard, broad leaves, it withstands extreme heat and the most intense solar radiation, and with its extremely deep root structure, which can reach up to two metres deep, it reaches moisture and cooler temperatures from the deeper regions of the soil.

Use: Hot locations, home gardens, fairways without sprinkling, sport fields, south-facing slopes, also suitable for southern/Mediterranean countries.

Installation Guide

Install it yourself

Ordering turf: Order the turf so that the delivery takes place when you are finished with your soil preparation. Factor in a loss of approximately 5 % from cuttings. Remove the packing film immediately after the turf arrives, lay rolled turf, roll it out and then water. By lifting a section of turf, check whether both the turf and approx. 5 cm of the soil are moist.

Soil preparation before laying: Deeply aerate, finely cultivate, grade and pre-roll the installation surface, then add the base fertilisers with 50 g/m2 Schwab Rollrasendünger® and 50 g/m2 Schwab Bodenstarter®. Then perform a final grading with fertiliser gently worked into the upper soil layers and then roll again. The grade should be firm enough to walk on, which means you do not leave any prints where you walk.

Completely new: Rolled sod in sandwich structure

Immediate care after laying: Freshly laid rolled turf should be kept moist constantly for the first 2 – 3 weeks. By then, sufficient roots will have formed to be able to extract water from the ground. Water daily during dry and hot weather. Only water enough that the turf and 5 cm of the soil are moist, but you can still walk on the turf. With overcast or rainy weather you can reduce the watering accordingly. The first cut should take place 5 – 8 days after laying. You can reduce the watering after growth (after 2 – 4 weeks). That means you should water 1 – 2 times per week with dry, sunny weather and with 15 – 20 litres per m2. You can purchase rain gauges and our water bug for garden watering from our online shop.
